LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
This is a policy that almost every community newspaper wrestles with. There is no universal rule, but there is a very strong industry convention.
The general practice is:
- Do not publish anonymous letters. Most community and regional newspapers require the writer to provide their full name, address and contact details, even if only the name (or sometimes just the suburb) is printed. This allows the editor to verify that the writer is genuine.
- The editor may withhold the name from publication in exceptional circumstances. This is uncommon, and usually only where there is a genuine risk of retaliation or harm—for example, a whistleblower exposing serious misconduct or someone writing about a sensitive personal issue. Even then, the editor should know the person’s identity.
- Editors retain the right to edit letters for length, clarity, grammar and legal reasons, provided the writer’s meaning is not materially changed.
- Letters should be factual or clearly expressed as opinion. Potentially defamatory or demonstrably false statements should not be published.
- One person should not dominate the letters page. Many papers limit how often the same writer can appear.
- Personal abuse is generally excluded. Robust debate is encouraged, but attacks on individuals, offensive language and discriminatory comments are not.
The rationale is simple: if people are prepared to criticise others publicly, they should generally be prepared to stand behind their comments. Anonymous letters also expose the paper to greater legal and reputational risk.
For 3799 Connect, we maintain the following stance:
Letters to the Editor
We welcome letters from readers on matters of local interest. Letters should include the writer’s full name, address and contact details for verification. Contact details will not be published.
We generally do not publish anonymous letters. In exceptional circumstances, where there is a compelling public interest and genuine concerns about the writer’s safety or privacy, the editor may agree to withhold the writer’s name from publication, provided the editor knows the writer’s identity.
The editor reserves the right to edit letters for length, clarity, accuracy and legal reasons, and to decline publication of material that is defamatory, offensive, misleading or not in the public interest. Publication of a letter does not imply endorsement by 3799 Connect.
This should encourage open debate while protecting both the paper and contributors. It also gives the editor discretion for the rare cases where anonymity genuinely serves the public interest rather than simply shielding someone from accountability.
